and these small changes in numbers lead to much larger changes in how the characters actually fight.

plus each character has like ~2 separate build paths with regards to stats + equipment + relics, too. and the limited magic lists make them all very good at certain things, too. characters have OBVIOUSLY more defense, or attack power, or magic damage, or speed, or whatever else than each other. none of them feel similar, they're not all damage dealing variants.
In brave new world, every character has a very, very different role. additionally, the lack of game difficulty, plus a plethora of bugs (evasion/hit rate not existing) and questionable design decisions (a fuck ton of stats that don't exist in other games, some of which don't do anything) means that any differences are squashed anyway. each of the different abilities in vanilla - blitz, tools, etc. To that end I really disagree with the notion the characters weren't unique enough on their own, without player intervention.ĮDIT: To be clear I'm gonna fire this up and play it, looking forward to it actually, I just disagree with the notion that "4x magic users with different character skins" was the default for most players by end game. Just for the time it would take and the monotony it would introduce I would have a hard time calling 4x "ultima users" as being the "best". I'm sure if someone wanted to or was kind of not great at the game they felt they had to cheese "the best spell" on all four characters.with gem boxes and economizers, no less.but it was never required nor did the game funnel you in that direction at any point. Not to mention you could just cheese with Vanish+X-zone just about any time you wanted to.THAT would technically be the most efficient strat in fights where it worked. If you're spending that much time grinding spells then just about anything would do the trick at that point. Not to mention it isn't time efficient (or much fun) to grind Ultima on 4/many/most characters. If you stuck with a main team, most people could hit 9999 with a skill as you approached the end of the game, if not sooner. I don't know that that was ever true, TBH.
